About Sophie Conklin, LCSW
Hi! Thanks for your curiosity to learn a little more about me and my practice, Embody Therapy. My goal is to provide support and guidance to individuals navigating challenging and overwhelming experiences.
I value creating a space where people feel able to show up authentically, explore what has impacted them, and work toward meaningful change in ways that feel supportive and sustainable.
My Approach
To me, therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Each person brings different experiences, strengths, needs, and goals into the process, and my approach is shaped collaboratively around what feels most helpful for you. If you’re not sure what is most helpful yet, that’s ok! We can take time to explore together. I would love to hear what has or has not been beneficial to you so far, and we can go from there.
Depending on your story and what you are navigating, therapy may incorporate approaches such as trauma-focused therapy, EMDR therapy (eye movements, desensitization, and reprocessing therapy), nervous system-focused interventions, mindfulness, parts work (internal family systems therapy), cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, or attachment work.
I enjoy balancing meaningful therapeutic work with authenticity, humor, and moments of lightness, too. Therapy can involve processing difficult experiences and taking action steps towards goals, while also creating space for connection, growth, and rebuilding a sense of self.
Clinical Background
Prior to becoming a therapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), I earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Penn State University and a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
In 2019, I began working with individuals navigating crisis, trauma, and post-traumatic stress (PTSD). During this time, I completed training as an emergency crisis shelter advocate, supporting survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. My role included providing crisis navigation to individuals impacted by violence, accompanying survivors through hospital care, and collaborating with law enforcement to help protect client rights while prioritizing safety and choice.
In 2022, I joined my first group practice in Madison, Wisconsin, where I worked as a trauma therapist with adults experiencing complex trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, and the lasting effects of sexual violence. Alongside my clinical work, I also advocated for improvements in mental health policy by lobbying with Wisconsin legislators to support broader access to mental health care and systemic change.
After relocating to the DMV area in 2023, I joined a wonderful Virginia-based group practice where I continued deepening my work with trauma therapy while expanding my experience supporting adults and teens navigating substance use, psychosis, neglect, personality disorders, intellectual and developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, burnout, and other complex life experiences.
Today, my work continues to center on trauma-informed care. While I support individuals navigating a wide range of trauma-related experiences, I have a particular passion for working with survivors of sexual trauma. I have received specialized training in sexual trauma treatment and am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, which can be incorporated into treatment when it aligns with a client's goals and needs.
I remain committed to continuing my education through advanced EMDR training as I work toward EMDR certification, Internal Family Systems Therapy workshops, and Somatic work, allowing me to further strengthen the care I provide to clients.
Sophie Outside of Therapy
In addition to my work as a therapist, I love creating different types of artwork with paints and sketch tools. I also enjoy paddle boarding, spending time in nature, exploring new places, learning about different cultures, and practicing my Spanish.
The music I listen to spans a wide range of genres, and I’m always excited to hear something new while staying physically active through lifting or dancing.
Spending quality time with loved ones and my two very fluffy cats, Light and L, are my favorite ways to spend time. I also have a strong sweet tooth for anything chocolate, and a soft spot for alternative/punk fashion, tattoos, and tea.
I believe the work of healing can be both meaningful and humanizing. While therapy often involves engaging with painful or overwhelming experiences, I value creating space for exploration of interests, laughter, connection, creativity, and celebration for moments of joy throughout our time together.
